WE ARE HIRING! RANGER/WILDLIFE MONITOR


Position: Ranger/Wildlife Monitor

Organisation: Limpopo Eco Operations (LEO Africa), South Africa


Position Description: LEO Africa is a big 5 wildlife monitoring and conservation volunteer project located on the Abelana Game Reserve, Limpopo, South Africa. Our mission is to help and provide reserve Management with relevant information on the key species on the reserve, such as lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino and hyena, as well as conservation work and contributing towards anti-poaching activities. LEO Africa is also an environmentally conscious organisation, operating in a responsible way and promoting sustainable living.


LEO Africa is seeking a dedicated, committed, motivated, hardworking and passionate guide/ranger to join our team. You will be involved in several aspects of conservation, and wildlife monitoring alongside duties at LEO base. Volunteers that join our project assist us in our work.


Duties to include, but not limited to:

· Monitoring drives with volunteers to specifically monitor Big 5, hyenas and cheetahs

· Conservation work

· Creation of ID kits of the species monitored

· Writing reports for the reserve management

· Fence patrol

· Camera trap processing

· Data insert and analysis

· Camp maintenance

· Other duties as required


Qualifications / Experience: Essential:

· FGASA Level 1 (Theory and Practical completed)

· Valid DEAT registration

· Valid PDP license

· Valid First Aid certificate

· ARH

· Experience with manual 4x4 bush driving and hold a valid driving licence

· Previous experience as a Field Guide/Ranger or in similar research and monitoring environment

· Computer literacy skills including Excel, Word and PowerPoint

· Good communication skills with fluent English, both spoken and written

· Ability to interact with people from different countries and diverse backgrounds.

· Physically fit, able to work in unfavourable conditions (e.g. heat or rain)

· Honest, trust-worthy and reliable

· Self-motivated, hard-working. organised and flexible in their work approach

· Must be able to work under pressure, independently and as a team with other staff members and volunteers

· Passionate about sustainable living, their work and that of Leo Africa

· Clean criminal record/proof of police check

· Non smoking (including vapes)


Desirable:

· Experience of creating ID kits

· Experience with data collection, organisation and animal identification

· Trails guide qualifications: SASSETA rifle competency certificate and Advanced Rifle Handling certificate and handgun for business purposes


Salary: Competitive

Support Provided: Food: Two meals per day will be provided. Meals out on Friday evenings at own expense (not compulsory)

Accommodation: A shared room with shared bathroom or a tent.

Term of Appointment: Fixed Terms

Start Date: Preferably May 2024
