OUR MISSION

Male Lion

The LEO Africa Foundation main mission is to protect wildlife and natural habitats for current and future generations to come, as nature is the base of the survival for all species.

In the short term, the LEO Africa Foundation, is seeking to save and treat animals that have been severely injured due to poaching activity. This requires an immediate response, possible thanks to a very precise and committed work in the field 24/7, advanced field equipment and funds to cover the cost for veterinarians, monitoring devices and rangers deployed on site.

The long term mission of the foundation is to create new game reserves, restoring land previously allocated to different uses and securing essential corridors for animal migration. This could be achieved by: collaborating with landowners (and making them understand the importance of dropping fences) and create partnerships with sponsors to raise funds necessary to purchase land and run the whole operation in a viable and ecological way. Through education and raising awareness, we aim to inspire others to take actions to benefit conservation and the preservation of our planet.

The LEO Africa Foundation actively seeks donors and partners to help carrying out this vital work, ensuring that our world’s most vulnerable species and ecosystems have healthy habitats to thrive. Together, we can create a sustainable future for wildlife and future generations.

our story

Founded in 2019 by Koos Niemann, Director and Senior Ranger of LEO Africa (www.leoafrica.org) , the LEO Africa Foundation was born from a deep passion for wildlife conservation and sustainable living. With years of experience working with volunteers and protecting endangered species, Koos established the LEO Africa Foundation as a platform to elevate conservation efforts and extend our reach. What began as a commitment to wildlife protection has grown into a comprehensive initiative that touches all aspects of environmental preservation. Through the dedication of our team and volunteers, we continue to grow and evolve, always guided by our mission to protect the natural world, with passion, enthusiasm, commitment and profound dedication.

The LEO Africa Foundation plays an active role in conserving wildlife and their habitats through various critical initiatives:

- Protecting Endangered Species: We focus on the protection of species most at risk, with a specialisation on white and black rhinos, cheetahs and pangolins .

- Monitoring and protecting key species: Big 5 and hyenas

- Fighting Poaching: Our team collaborates with the anti-poaching teams deployed on the reserve to combat poaching. Our team is dedicated to conduct snare sweeps, fence patrols, large predators intensive monitoring (to analyse their movements, especially scavengers species) and camera traps placements (for security and monitoring purposes) .

- Veterinary Intervention: We collaborate with local wildlife vets to try and save animals severely injured due to poaching.

- Wildlife Monitoring: By tracking and studying animal movements and behavior on a daily basis, we gather extremely valuable and accurate data on key species.

- Reserve Management Consulting: We advise on best practices for wildlife reserve management, ensuring these spaces are optimally managed to benefit both wildlife and the environment.

- Data Collection for Research: We collect data for conservation research purposes.

- Preserving Natural Habitat: At the heart of everything we do is the protection and restoration of natural habitats, ensuring they remain pristine and sustainable for generations to come.

- We advise reserve management and anti-poaching teams in the best practices to apply for an efficient and conservation orientated management of the reserve/natural area.

- Liaison with landowners, donors to purchase land for conservation, with the aim to create new habitat for wildlife or restore land that was dedicated to other uses.

Nature is the foundation of life on Earth. At LEO Africa Foundation, we understand that protecting wildlife and their habitats is not just important—it's essential. Our dedicated team is committed to making a lasting impact on the environment, and we invite you to join us in this critical mission. Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word, your support is key to ensuring that nature thrives for generations to come.
