Newsletter May 2008
The LEO team witnessed the females, Mica and Amarula, devouring a Kudu minutes after they killed it. Next morning Shaka and Mopani ousted the females and had their fill before the vultures moved in to clean the carcass.. two days of spectacular sightings!!
Newsletter April 2008
It certainly has been an interesting month. The lions have provided us with some great sightings whilst at the same time causing great confusion with their unexpected movement patterns in the past month.
Newsletter March 2008
It’s happened! We have finally caught a glimpse of Selati and her cubs! We have been waiting long enough! Selati eventually thought that it was time she introduced us to her new offspring. We have had a very busy month with some great sightings of the brat pack and Mica, the collared elephants (who are still yet to be named!) and the ever reliable Shaka and Mopani.
Newsletter February 2008
We chased the rain away with our optimism and Selati is already showing signs of a dry season. Nvertheless, a busy month for us at LEO Africa with plenty of data recorded and the start of a new edition of the LEO-FGASA
workbook and lectures.
Newsletter January 2008
After a few weeks off the LEO team was back at it, trying to find the lions and see who’s hanging with whom. We were also keen to know whether they’ve missed us! Apparently they hadn’t missed us much- the first sightings of the New Year were brief to say the least, and basically consisted of visions of lion’s bottoms heading away from us - except for the ever dependable Shaka.
Newsletter November - December 2007
The rain has continued and the summer visitors have arrived: milvus kites and steppe buzzards, woodland kingfishers and Eurasian swallows to name just a few. Summer also means the welcome of a new batch of skinks, chameleons and geckos around the LEO Africa house and boma. We have also had many other (perhaps not so welcomed) reptilian and arachnid visitors both inside and outside of the LEO house!
Newsletter October 2007
Yet again another month at Selati! Thankfully the rains started at the end of September and continued into October for a good 4 days. At the LEO Africa camp alone we notched up 64.5mm of rainfall and the reserve has been transformed...
Newsletter September 2007
September has been a very eventful month for us at LEO Africa with some incredible sightings of the lions and some fortuitous visuals of the other animals, including elephant and leopard, on the reserve thrown in for good measure!
Newsletter May - August 2007
Once again, it seems that time has been flying and you are overdue a newsletter but we are happy now to be able to update you on the latest news. It has been quite an eventful few months for the reserve, as you will read in the following updates.
Leopard Spotted in Selati
On Fri 10th August, at last, a young female leopard was spotted on Selati and collared. LEO has been spending as much time with her as possible as part of the habituation process and will keep you all updated
More news soon...
Newsletter March and April 2007
LEO has had another great few months, as you will see from the update that follows.

results, sightings and have started a few pilot studies...
Newsletter February 2007
The month of February has been quieter than anticipated with the number of
volunteers arriving. And although during the late night drives many signs of leopard
activity were recorded there have been zero sightings...
Newsletter January 2007
We'll be using the same successful formula as last year in our endeavour to get
accurate data, but we initiated a few minor changes during January. We still went out
on morning and late afternoon drives, but also added a late night drive which was
dedicated to the search for leopard...
